Software Description

The Learning Curve Fitting and Target Generator Software Tools give the analyst the ability to calculate learning curve parameters from actual data and generate resource targets based on application of a learning curve formula. These tools are complimentary and have wide application in manufacturing areas that are labor intensive such as aircraft manufacturing and ship building.

Learning curve theory addresses the phenomena of continuous improvement as the manufacturing team becomes more experienced from unit to unit. Typically this phenomena is characterized by a constant percent improvement in per unit resource consumption as the cumulative production doubles. (There are two main Learning Curve approaches: the Unit Model and the Cumulative Average Model. The Learning Curve Fitting Tool and Target Generator Tool can be used with either model.)

For instance, consider a product on a 90% learning curve based on the Unit Model: Unit #1 may use 100 hours, Unit 2 would use 90 hours, Unit 4 would use 81 hours, unit 8 would use 72.9 hours, and so on. The learning curve parameters in this instance are: Number 1 Units Resource=100, Learning Curve as a % = 90.

In the past, analysts would use log/log graph paper and a special learning curve protractor to estimate the learning curve parameters from plotted actual data points. This often was not very accurate and also time consuming, particularly when a number of areas were being studied. Target generation required using a special reference manual of learning curve factors and cranking out targets one by one.

The Registered Version accepts up to 1,000 pairs of points for study. The Trial Version is limited to analysis of 10 data pairs only. The Target Generator Tool (an Excel spreadsheet) is only functional for registered users but is supplied in the Trial version. There is a non-functional demo spreadsheet included in the download and can be accessed through the main program. We will send you the functional spreadsheet password when you register the tool.

The tool offers a straight forward approach to problem formulation with a simple and familiar spreadsheet-type interface for entering data. The help file (accessed by its menu or pressing the F1 key) contains step-by-step instructions on solving problems and a tutorial on using the Target Generator Tool.

 (Please note that the target generation tool requires a version of MS Excel on the host computer.)
